Welcome

What kind of food sustains you and nourishes you especially for a hard day ahead?

Word

John 4:7-14, 34-35 (read until verse 45)

(read until verse 45)

There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” 11 She said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water? 12 You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.

Jesus once told His disciples, during a stop in Samaria, that the “food” which sustained and satisfied Him was to do the will of His Father and accomplish His work (John 4:34). In the same way, we should find our greatest joy in doing God’s work and completing the assignment He has entrusted to us.

Praise God that throughout the CCF movement around the world, countless men and women are doing exactly that—serving others with compassion and a sense of urgency because we do not know when Christ will return. Scripture repeatedly reminds us that Jesus can come at any time. Until then, we are called to share Him with others. Live Your Purpose. Share Like Jesus.

Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman teaches us how.

LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITIES

John tells us that Jesus “had to pass through Samaria” (John 4:3–6). This was intentional. Although Jews often avoided Samaria because of deep cultural and religious hostility, Jesus deliberately chose this route because He had a divine appointment with one woman.

Jesus looked for opportunities even when it was inconvenient. He was tired from His journey, yet He stopped at Jacob’s well to meet someone who desperately needed Him.

The Samaritan woman was going through a difficult season in life. Often, people become more open to God during times of pain, disappointment, or uncertainty. In those moments, God is already at work in their hearts. He simply invites us to join Him.

Don’t let the Great Commission become the Great Omission. God desires to use every believer. Today, opportunities to share Christ extend far beyond face-to-face conversations. Through social media, messaging apps, and online meetings, we can reach people around the world without leaving our homes. As we share the gospel, we can also connect those living abroad with faithful local churches, including CCF satellite churches where available (Romans 10:14–15).

INITIATE MEANINGFUL CONVERSATIONS

Jesus began the conversation with a simple request: “Give Me a drink” (John 4:7). He did not begin by confronting the woman’s sinful lifestyle or engaging in theological debate. Instead, He humbly asked for something she could offer Him. From an ordinary conversation about water, Jesus gradually led her to eternal truths.

He also broke significant cultural barriers. Jewish men generally avoided speaking publicly with Samaritan women, yet Jesus intentionally reached out to her. He spoke with her privately rather than in the presence of His twelve disciples, creating an environment where she could openly engage with Him (vv. 8–12).

Jesus moved naturally from her physical thirst to her spiritual thirst. He spoke about the living water that only He could give—the gift of eternal life (vv. 13–15). Many people seek satisfaction through money, success, relationships, or achievements, but lasting fulfillment is found only in Christ. As the conversation continued, Jesus graciously addressed the deeper issue in her life. He revealed His knowledge of her broken relationships without condemning her (vv. 16–18). Having had five husbands, she undoubtedly carried deep emotional wounds and disappointment. Jesus met her with both truth and grace.

Our role is not to change people’s hearts—that is God’s work. Our responsibility is simply to share the gospel faithfully, trusting that “it is the power of God for salvation” (Romans 1:16).

KEEP REACHING OUT

Throughout the conversation, the Samaritan woman’s understanding of Jesus steadily grew. She first referred to Him simply as a Jew, then as “Sir,” later recognized Him as a prophet, and eventually believed He was the Messiah (vv. 19–26).

People often come to faith gradually. We should not become discouraged if someone does not immediately understand or believe.

At one point, the woman redirected the conversation to the long-standing debate about the proper place of worship. Jesus patiently answered her question, explaining that true worship is not confined to a location but is offered “in spirit and truth” (vv. 20–24).

The Samaritans expected the Messiah primarily as a teacher, but Jesus made an astonishing declaration: “I who speak to you am He.” He revealed Himself as the promised Messiah (vv. 25–26).

God can soften even the hardest heart. The woman believed, left her water jar behind, and immediately went into the city to tell others about Jesus (vv. 28–30). She became the first recorded missionary to the Samaritans. Her transformed life became a powerful testimony that pointed others to Christ.

Never grow weary in doing good, because God is able to do far more than we can imagine (Galatians 6:9).

EMPOWER OTHERS TO DO THE SAME

Many Samaritans initially believed because of the woman’s testimony, but even more believed after personally hearing Jesus’ words (vv. 39–41). Our testimony may open the door, but it is God’s Word that transforms lives.

As we disciple others, we should also equip them to share Christ. We can encourage them to:
Share Your Testimony
Act like Jesus (Colossians 4:5-6); be like Jesus so others will like Jesus.
Meet up (Dgroup Project to reach out to others as a Dgroup)
Explain the Good News

Jesus came “to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10), and He now sends us to continue His mission. May we treasure the Word of God, which gives life and satisfies our deepest needs. Jesus alone is the Living Water who gives eternal life (John 4:13–14).

The world desperately needs to hear this message. May we live out our God-given purpose, share like Jesus, and faithfully proclaim His gospel to as many people as possible—here and around the world—until our King returns.
