Inductive Bible Study - 11th session

March 25, 1998

Let me just quickly review so that we will close the inductive today, please come next week we will now practice inductive. See we have taught you the principles we will now put it into a lot of practice and the only way to know this is to do it again and again.

So What’s it called? Inductive Bible Study.

Ano ang opposite ng inductive? Deductive.

What is Inductive? How do you define that? Inductive means you look at the facts first, what do you see, you gather the facts and then it leads you to a conclusion. Yung deductive naman baliktad meron ka nang conclusion then you look at the facts.

What are the parts of Inductive Bible Study?

Observation - What do I see?

Interpretation - What does the author mean?

Application - How does it apply to me?

Ano ang pinakaimportante? All of them because you cannot have good application without good observation and without good observation you cannot have good interpretation.

What are the things that you should look for? Start with key words then cause and effect and then commands and then linking words very important barrage it with a lot of questions what are those? 5 W’s and 1H. Look for the clues. What are the clues? Things that are compared, things that are different, things that are similar and then interpretation ano’ng key dun? What are the three C’s? You check the context, you look at the concordance, you check the word meanings and then you get the cross reference. Lastly we come to interpretation. If you interpret properly that means just see what the bible say in its proper context know what the word meanings are darating ka ngayon sa interpretation na tama and then you will now apply. What is the application formula? Since most of the things that we will read in the bible will not be applicable directly you have to get what? The bridge. What’s the bridge? Principles. What is a principle? Okay, so a principle is a precise statement of a universal truth. In other words it’s true in China, it’s true Egypt, it’s true in the Philippines. So you make a simple statement. It should be general not specific and then it should agree with the rest of scripture lastly you make it action oriented so when you make a principle start with the truth knowing that state the truth. Then you get an accountability partner. In the cell group we want to encourage that as well because if we never put it into practice sayang lang ang accountability. We study the Bible. Why has Ricky Samson change? Because God is not yet through with me he is the one transforming me. We study the Bible not for information but for transformation, He knows I have long way to go to become like Jesus and if you just listen to God it will all be all right. What’s the acronym for application? Practice. Give me the first P. P-romise that you can claim. R- elationship to fix, A- ttitude to change, C - ommand to obey, T - ruth or Principle to remember, I- nsubordination, C-ondition, E-xample.

What we’d like to do is to take a simple passage this evening and show you how to do this and starting next week after inductive Bible study the most important thing to you need to know is to pray. How many of you feel that you’re already a master prayer warrior? How many feel they can grow in their prayer life? We will now begin to show you from God’s word how you should pray. We will use inductive Bible study methods to study all the prayers in the bible. See how will learn how to pray? So, it’s like if you want to play golf you go with the master. If you want to succeed in anything in life you must have a teacher somebody who has reach the height you want to go to and then the method I learned a long time ago, the method that Jesus taught, stick with Him, just be with Him, be with Him everywhere after a while you will be just like Him and if He’s successful in what His doing what do you think will happen to you? so will you. And therefore to become prayer warriors what you have to do is to go with the people who pray well. Who are those? Jesus Christ, David, Moses, Daniel they are the people you want to be with. You want to study how they prayed. Then you will now use your inductive Bible skills and observe how they prayed then you copy so yung application mo will always be something like this knowing that Daniel prayed this way and God answered his prayer I desire to do the same thing by….

Nelson Dy will begin to teach starting next week on the assignment that I’ll give you. I’ll give you the assignment now, you study it and together we will all grow and our objective is to become like Jesus Christ, like His men who prayed well because if you read scripture and you know how to pray you have the best combination for spiritual growth and if you have those two and your armed and equipped you can go and teach other people. It does not matter if you have never gone to seminary, if you have never read the commentary it’s all right as long as you’ve study the bible, you know how to do it and you’re actually prayer so we want to turn this into a prayer class. And the assignments that we will be giving you in a short while we will do after we look at Genesis 22:1-19

Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!"

"Here I am," he replied.

[2] Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about."

[3] Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. [4] On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. [5] He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you."

[6] Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, [7] Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?"

"Yes, my son?" Abraham replied.

"The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"

[8] Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together.

[9] When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. [10] Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. [11] But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!"

"Here I am," he replied.

[12] "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son."

[13] Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. [14] So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided."

[15] The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time [16] and said, "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, [17] I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, [18] and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me."

[19] Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

Going on the basis of your old learning what would some of the principles be? Okay, obedience, fear God and God will bless you, trust in the Lord. This is such a rich passage that it can have many, many principles. Some time later God tested Abraham. Observe please. So from this God is testing Abraham, from that simple line what can you learn? What question will come to your mind? Why, what. What kind of test? What is it for? What’s the objective of the test? What is the passing mark? So dito lang by just asking a lot of questions on the very first sentence you can have a preaching session all together. So this section is about testing but its testing Abraham so what do you do to get a principle? You see He’s testing Abraham. What’s the principle? God tested Abraham, is that a principle? Why is that not a principle? So what will you now do automatic in your mind, how will you now generalize? Okay God test His people. Look at the other words "some time later" events what are those? Its the birth of Isaac. Some time later, that has to do with what W? When, so what question comes to your mind? When did God test Abraham? When does God test us? Is that the good question? See the testing of Abraham comes only after when? What kind of promise? A very long promise, then it’s fulfilled, that is the time God tested Abraham. What that does now tell you if you now begin to generalize that? Do you understand what I’m trying to get at? Ano na ngayon ang principle? So when did God test Abraham? After God had fulfilled a long time promise to him, after Abraham had seen God’s faithfulness, God tested him. When will God tests us? when you least expect or when God showed to us that He is faithful? See God will not test us otherwise. This kind of test, what will you called this test? Heart checking. Has God fulfilled a promise in your life? If God has done that what should you expect God to do? if He did it with Abraham He’ll probably do it to you. Now the question is why did He test Abraham? It indicates that God has a time. In fact if you look at Ecclesiastis, He has a time for everything. Everything is time down there’s nothing accidental. That’s a nice principle. Sometime later God is in the business of testing people, His people after He has revealed Himself to them that’s the time will severely test you. There might be other test before that but the hard ones they come after God has revealed to you who He is because that will now give you the… Why does God do it after? God will tests us at different points in our life you need to understand the purposes of God. What is His major purpose according to this verses? Is it to flunk us, to make life difficult, to make us better, to develop us? The bible say what? Look at Genesis 22:17, I will surely bless you. You see God’s heart, God want to bless us but we have to passed the testing, we have submit our self to God’s test. Did this test, what can you say about the test. Look at Genesis 22:2, Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about." Observation please, be specific. What should you do? You list down all those facts, the next column you put general. What’s the equivalent of your son, your only son whom you love, the one you love most? What’s that? something that you’ve been yearning for so many years so when you say something that you love, your only possession, your only treasure, it now becomes general. So we will now answer the question. What is God’s test? If you are willing to offer to something not your son that is really valuable to you, that’s the test so knowing that, what’s really valuable to you? You’ll now begin application time. If you were there what is it that you’ll love most on this earth? There are only a few things do you that? You cannot love many things because many things you loose them. What are some of the things we love? Yourself, that’s one of the things we love the best ourselves therefore the question is are you willing to sacrifice yourself to God? What else? Your position, your family. Who have not yet been tested by God? what does that tell you? Maybe the time has not yet come, maybe you need to go some more. Some people they think they are being tested and you know what they are so far away from being tested by God. They have lots of trials in their life and they think that that’s God test. Hardship is one thing, this is not hardship do you understand? Hinde siya nasunugan ng bahay, hinde siya nawalan ng trabaho this is so totally different from that. It’s a choice. God’s test is always a choice. Did you see that? When you observe that God will give you a choice. This is different from hardship. What is God testing here? The visual is like this. How do you hold on to things? Somebody said, Merong isang kung fu movie, hawak-hawak nung bata yung ibon sa likuran, tapos tinanung niya yung kung fu master. Kung fu master, is the bird I’m holding in my hand dead or alive? Kais pag sinabi nung kung fu master na alive papatayin niya yung ibon, pag sinabi namang dead buhay so tinitest niya yung kung fu master. Is it dead or is alive? Alam mo ang sagot sa kanya? You have the power in your hands, the power of life or death is in your hands. Do you know that’s a smart comment, it’s in your hands the power to choose God’s way or not because God will test us there will be a point in your life, there will be a cross road. You’ll come to the point in your life where you will be tested by God and you know His test is singular it is not plural it is always singular. It’s like the rich man. Remember the rich man, he confronted Jesus and he says "What should I do to gain eternal life?" and Jesus told him, what was law say? Well the law says, he listed all the commandments except for loving God. and he said I have done this since I was a little boy and sabi ni Jesus, one thing you lack. What’s that? Go sell everything, give it to the poor then follow me. The rich man he was confronted with the same choice that Abraham had, How did I know that? It’s called cross reference, searching through the bible. If you just read your bible and do the assignment kitang kita mo yun. What happen to the rich man? The bible says, he turned away very sad. You know he had in front of him the greatest choice of all times and he missed it. Unfortunately for most of us we are not like Abraham we are more like the rich man hopefully we’ll become more like Abraham but many of us God is calling us, God is asking us to make hard choices. Whenever you are at that cross road where the choices are difficult then you say to yourself "test ba ni God ito?" If it is something that you don’t want to get rid off maybe God is already testing you. You’ve got to be like Abraham, see Abraham at faith and he said God will perform. Does God wants to bless us? Romans 12:1

I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.

So today as we close will you offer that to the Lord, will you offer yourself to God, God is not asking for very much, He’s just asking for your heart.

We will study three prayers next week. Write down the ffg:

Exodus 15

Luke 1:46-55

Psalm 51

I want you to study those and see what you can learn.

Let’s close in Prayer.
