Inductive Bible Study 3rd session

January 28, 1998

Deut. 8:3

"And He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD.

So, I firmly believed the reason why many Christians sin or have a difficult time conquering temptation is because they’re not following the step of Jesus. The only way to conquer God’s temptation is through God’s word, it’s the only sword. If you don’t know how to study God’s word you’ll never make it.

Jesus, He used the bible in Matthew 22 to forecast what would happen in the future and the incident here in the bible is there was one woman and in the Jewish law if you are married to that woman and you died your brother should marry her so that she gets a child and then the seven men married this woman. So the question of Jesus is when they all go to heaven who will be the husband of the woman in heaven? Jesus said, How ignorant you are, Jesus told them you’re so ignorant because you don’t know scripture. Jesus said if you were in heaven she will not be the wife of anybody

What’s the most important use of God’s word?

Luke 24:25

And He said to them, "O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

When Jesus calls you foolish, does that sounds good? If you have a PHD or masters degree and then you walk up to Jesus and then Jesus calls you foolish, how do you feel? See, the way people are judged is always against a bench mark. When will we be foolish in the eyes of Jesus? It takes them to believe what is written by the prophets in the bible.

If you don’t know, if you are ignorant of scripture, Jesus will call you foolish. Unfortunately our mistake is we think we know scripture. You see our greatest problems is our hearts are hard, they’re slow to believe. We don’t an intellectual problem, we don’t have an eyesight problem, we have a heart problem. That’s the problem of Christians that’s why we don’t study God’s word and even when we study we have a major problem. Our heart is very deceitful. Therefore, Jesus came to the most important point. What did Jesus do, since this are foolish men have always wondered how I would feel if Jesus called me foolish.

Now in v. 27, what happened?

Luke 24:27

And beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. I discovered and I discovered it later in my Christian life rather than earlier, one of the greatest most important usage of the bible is to know God personally. Jesus use the bible to explain himself to men. If we can only communicate this to you that studying God’s word our most important key is to know God personally.

So when you approach the bible remember you’re not approaching a book, you’re approaching a person, you are approaching the king of the universe, the one who became and died for all of us, the one who shed his blood to for you. If there’s no fire there for Jesus, if there’s no love there for Jesus, if you don’t want to really know Jesus all these things that we will teach you from now on will be nice but it won’t work.

Vital Parts of Inductive Study

  1. Observation

What do I see?

  1. Interpretation

What does it mean?

What is author’s meaning?

  1. Application

How does it apply to me?

Now, we will begin to teach you how to observe. I will teach you whenever you read a verse what you should be looking for. The first thing that you should look for when you read a passage of scripture is what?

    1. Look for key words - those that are repeated often.

The first passage we will look for is 1John 4:7-21

Key word: God’s love

I want you to give me a dissertation on God’s love. Look at what it says about God. In other words what do you see. So after you have isolated God’s love, observed as many things as you can about love.

So the assignment is list down everything there is, that’s called observing what the bible, what this passage says about your key word.

I want you to do the same thing for the following passages. Find the key word or words and then I want you to list down as many things about that thought.

Luke 9:57-62

1Cor. 6:12-20

1Tim. 6:17-19

Let’s all close with a word of prayer.
