3 You shall not take the name of God in vain etc.

2. BUT THAT IS THE OLD TESTAMENT --- IT NO LONGER APPLIES TODAY

If that is so, why does the church continue to preach it in its altered form? --- who has the right to second-guess God?

whoever annuls the least of these ---

matt 5:21-48 Christ tightened --- rather than relax or cancel any moral law

3. THE CONDEMNATION OF IDOLATRY IS CONSISTENT THROUGHOUT THE NEW TESTAMENT

act 15:20 council deals with contamination by idols

act 17:15 Paul provoked by Athens --- full of idols

1 cor 5:11 do not associate with an idolater

1 cor 6:9 idolaters will not enter the kingdom

1 cor 10:14 flee from idolatry !!!

gal 5:19-20 deeds of the flesh --- idolatry

1 jn 5:21 guard yourselves from idols

rev 9:20 idols of gold, silver ---

4. BUT THEY ARE ONLY SYMBOLS --- WE PRAY NOT TO THEM BUT TO WHAT THEY REPRESENT

exo 32:4-5 this is your God --- O Israel( 1-10 )exactly what idolaters of golden calf were doing --- praying to God of Israel --- represented by the golden calf

5. CHURCH HISTORY --- HOW DID IT DEVELOP?

590-604 Pope Gregory officially approved use of images in churches

726 Leo III ordered images placed high so worshippers couldn't kiss them --- when that failed, he forbid the use of images

754 iconoclastic dispute --- breaking of images --- Council of Constantinople confirmed Leo III

787 Council at Nicea reversed earlier council

1546 Council of Trent decrees use of images of Christ and saints particularly in churches --- and directs that honor and veneration be given them
