Genesis

Lesson 5

Free to Choose but not free to escape to consequences of our decision

Last week with chapter 3. What is the theme of the book of Genesis? You will notice what happened immediately. The fall. This is the reason why we have suffering and pain.

Tonight we will study chapters 4 and 5

Example: we are free to jump from the building, but we are not free to escape the consequences of our decision. Whether you understand this or not does matter, it is still true.

Gen 4:1 – Cain first born

Bible is not exhaustive, only chose to mention certain facts.

Gen 4:3 –

Jude 11 – warns us, woe to them who have gone the way of Cain.

What is the way of Cain?

Gen 4:3-4 – he worshiped God but he was self-willed, boss of his life.

What is the way of Cain?

  1. Worships without Heart

Gen 4:4 –5 – God had no regard for Cain’s offering. Why didn’t God accept Cain’s

offering? On regular basis, Cain would offer, go to church. How will you know if God is happy with your worship?

Isa 29:13 – What kind of worship is pleasing to God? Lip service

They removed their hearts far from me. Are you sincere in your desire to worship God? Worship is ritualistic, problem with Cain

1 John 3:11 –12 – message. My private life from Monday to Saturday is going to

affect my worship on Sunday. If my life is not right, what I offer to God does not matter. Giving fat checks to the church yet continues to sin. What kind of lifestyle is that? Can we bribe God? Tonight God looks at your heart.

2. Heart that does not listen to God

Gen 4:5 – something was wrong with Cain’s life.

Gen 4:7 - How do we know something is wrong in our life? Look at your emotions.

Emotions are warning lights. Anger – ask yourself, am I angry? The reason almost always is "pride" is hurt. Every negative emotion is a warning light. Stop light. Before God is a warning light. Must stop. Yellow in this country means go ahead! But it really means Stop1 Do not step on the gas. We need to slow down, reflect, and not go ahead. Learn to listen to the voice of God. Cain didn’t listen to God. Sin is cro9uching at the door. Is there anything in your life that God is telling you to do and you are not doing?

Gen 4:6 – Why are you angry? Bakit? The unexamined life is a dangerous life.

Listen when being corrected. Woman in Bible – Quiet time – she was a real estate broker. She took God’s prodding seriously. When God convicted her to make something right with someone. She immediately did something about it, called her and apologized.

3. He took sin lightly

Gen 4:7 – What controls emotions? According to this verse 7, against all present

psychological technique that we learn from.

This goes against current traditions of counseling.

What controls emotions according to v. 7?

If you do well.

I will not do it until I feel right, we are enslaved t o our feelings.

We have become slaves to our feelings. We are enslaved to our emotions.

Walk by faith, what happens? Your feelings follow sooner or later.

As you follow the Lord, feelings will come.

Feelings may never come. Friend, who could not speak without stuttering, thought he could never teach bible. One day she was asked to teach. One of the best bible teachers, she followed God.

Gen 4:7 – What sin was God telling Cain to solve?

Envy, pride, jealousy.

All kinds of sin are major. Aids virus – how much virus do you need to become infected. Doctor who says you only have a few cancers cells. You will take out because they multiply. Sin multiplies. Small sin blinds them and they become complacent and it led to anger and murder.

Principle: Every time you re convicted by the Spirit of God, repent. Humble yourself and come to Christ to change you.

Gen 4:8 – Cain rose up against his brother and killed him. Where is Able your brother? Cain deluded himself in thinking he could get away with everything he did. What would you have done if you were Cain? God speaks to us and convicts us as we transfer accountability from self to others. Blaming others, everyone’s fault except myself.

  1. He was cursed

Gen 4:11 – slanderer

Gen 4:14 –

Isa 57: - Way of Cain, will not have your peace, you will always be a wandered,

running here and there, hopping from one relationship to another, never

really happy.

Isa 57:21 – There is no peace for the wicked.

When you are alone in your house, there is no peace for the wicked

Wicked – when one’s confidence is not in the Lord

Isa 57:20 – Cain never experienced peace. He became a wanderer. Way of Cain

Gen 4:15 – Sign - not clear

Gen 4:16 – away from the presence of the Lord

Gen 4:17 – architect, Enoch

Gen 4:18 – Father

Family line of Cain – polygamy – until Lamech who had 2 wives becomes

problematic

Gen 4:20 – Archaeologists are shocked because evolutionists say man is a primitive

being. Findings show civilizations of humanity that have farm

implements, people who are civilized

Gen 4:21 - Juabal – music was already there

Gen 4:22 – not backward

Gen 4:23 – Lamech is the epitome of pride, revengeful, self-willed. Way of Cain.

Gen 4:4 – Abel, what was the offering of Abel?

The Best genuine worship – Gen 11

A life of false worship A life of true worship

False Worship Way of righteous worship. God according to his ways. Acknowledges one’s sinfulness Heb 11:4 – animal – blood was shed when God spoke to Adam – when you offer a blood offering, we need to come to God according to his way

Abel offered to God something in accordance to what God had told Him.

Grain offering as a rule not necessarily wrong, sin offering means blood offering.

Lev 4:22 – Thanksgiving offering

God gave them a principle

Heb 11:4 – either sacrifices

By faith means coming to God based on his ways.

  1. Admit sinfulness

Pride is self-righteousness no matter how self righteous you think you are you are never righteous enough.

Heb 11:5

Gen 5:21-22 – Enoch lived 65 years, walked with God 300 years. First man not to

experience death.

Gen 5:5 –he died

Gen 5:8 – he died

Gen 5:11 – he died

Gen 5:14 – he died

Gen 5 20 – he died - consequence of sin – you shall surely die.

How do you experience the way of the righteous?

John 4:2 – in spirit and in truth

Gen 5:22 – 66 years walked with God 300 years after Methuselah.

How do we walk with God?

Heb 11:5 – ultimate destiny of a man who walks with God

Heb 11:6 – Faith is what pleases God and he is a "rewarder" of those who seek Him

Focus your eyes not only on what he has done for you but what he will do

for you.

Rev – reign forever and ever with him

Atheist - If God does not exist you have nothing to lose. However, if there is a god and the bible is the word of God, you are in big trouble
